How to change unsecured wireless network to secured?

I have a wireless network that uses Dlink router. I have two dekstops one running Vista another XP Home. Also two laptops. When I created the network I guess I made it unsecured by mistake. Now I would like to change it, but not sure exactly how to to do it and what would be the changes I need to be aware off? Does it chnage how I would be accessing the network from diff computers? Also, what type of security should I choose? How to change unsecured wireless network to secured?
Ok go to start then click run

type cmd

now a console window called command prompt will open

type ipconfig

scroll up and look for : Default Gateway

all them numbers after all them dots that is your routors ip address

open up a web browser and type it in

for example mine is 192.168.1.1 so i would open up my webbrowser and type: 192.168.1.1

ok now you will be asked for a administrator username and password

the default username and password is useually

Username: admin

password: admin

Now find the security page

there might or might not be a hyperlink that says security

now if you have found the security tab click it

now go to Wireless Connection

Next change the wep key security code to what you want it to be

for example:

A5KD9EJMAMSNOSPS2847QA9SPS23U4384JSPS3?br>
now click Submit

the moment you click submit all your internet connections will be offline

simpley reconnect to your network and put the wep key you changed it to in.

Hope this helpedHow to change unsecured wireless network to secured?
To be more specific, we need to find the gateway address(that's just the address to your router) that is usually 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1. To find that there are a few way, the first is going to START-%26gt;RUN-%26gt;type in ';CMD'; press enter and then type ';ipconfig'; and press enter, that will show you what the gateway is. You can also go to the Control Panel-%26gt;the go to either network and internet connections or network connections or network and sharing center if you are on vista, then in xp ';right click'; on your wireless network and click ';status';, click on the ';support'; tab, then click ';details'; and you will see your gateway. In vista, you go to the network and sharing center and on the left hand side you click on ';change adapter settings';, then you right click on your wireless connection and click ';status'; and then click on ';details';

Now that you have your gateway address open up mozilla firefox or internet explorer, or whatever browser you have and erase everything in the address bar, that's the big bar that has the http://........., and put in gateway in the address bar,

for example if my gateway address was 192.168.1.1, I would put in (192.168.1.1) into the address bar, then click enter.

You will then bring up a screen that will either ask you for a user name and password, or it will bring you straight to your router settings. The User name and Password can be a alot of different things, and if you still have the instructions you may want to look for the default password, I've see default router passwords as user name:admin password:admin or user name:admin password:nothing(leave it blank), or user name:nothing password:admin. If you are already logged into the the router that is great, if not you may have to either do some more research on your router or reset to be able to login using the default password.

Now to your original question, once you are in your router click on either ';wireless settings';, or ';wireless'; see if there is a open for wireless security and choose either WPA or WPA2(some devices do not support WPA2), and then if you want the most secure connection choose your authentication as AES(butt again some device do not support that), choose a password that meets the requirement, and make sure to ';WRITE DOWN YOUR PASSWORD';, after you have click save, and now you will be disconnected from your internet connection, wait 30 seconds and now search for wireless networks in your area, and now you will see your wireless network but this time it will have a lock right next to it and you will now click on it and enter your new password, you will have to repeat these steps for connecting to your secure wireless network on your other wireless computers.

Sorry for such long instructions, but I hoped I helped you out a little.
Log in to your wireless router and change the security in the wireless settings, WPA2 is a good one to pick, then WPA, or WEP if you don't have that.

You have to enter the key for every computer that will connect to the network,
What he said, but also make sure to use MAC authentication and do NOT broadcast your SSID.

  • How to improve network bandwidth or downloading speed in a dial-up internet connection?

I am using a dial-up modem with 230Kbps speed to connect internet. I'm getting the downloading speed at maximum of 16KBps. What is the highest downloading speed for my modem and how can I get this? I've already used DAP(Download Accelerator Plus) and Flashget. If I need to change my network settings? Please help. Thanks in advance. How to improve network bandwidth or downloading speed in a dial-up internet connection?
I'm afraid that's all your connection can do. The programs you installed won't really help in speed. If i were you i'd get a broadband connection. How to improve network bandwidth or downloading speed in a dial-up internet connection?
you need to contact yur isp for this.
The highest speed you can get with this modem is 230Kbps. If you're only getting 16Kbps, then something is wrong somewhere. Of course, it could just be that the server you were accessing was busy and could only manage 16K - there are a variety of factors to consider from the line you connect to, to the servers you connect to - more often than not, the problem is one of the servers you are connected to.

Have you considered going to DSL?
Sorry to tell you, but this is why dial up is no longer a viable option for accessing the Internet.

Dial up uses a series of tones to send data. In this day of digital data and fiber optic lines, most voice transmissions are chopped, diced folded, spindled and mutilated many times between the sender and the receiver. The human ear is a pretty crude instrument these days and does not know that the sounds that you hear coming over the phone has been chopped into little pieces and a bunch of stuff removed. It just all blends together and you never know.

But your modem knows, and it has a heck of a time figuring out what is real and what is noise, slowing down the whole process. So dial up just keeps getting worse, and the phone companies don't care because they want you to switch to DSL or broadband or wireless.

There is no easy cheap fix. If you want to get on the web, you will be forced to step up and purchase a better plan.

    Sorry
You do need to change your networking settings. But be careful when you do because if you do certain things, it can wipe out your hard drive with the 230Kbps connectivity. Just be aware. If you need more help, email me at xxa.eamberxx1@yahoo.com. (:
that 16 kbps speed is only you are going to get....same is true even on 115.2 kbp

    You don't have a router.

Your computer is connected directly to your comcast modem.

You'll have to buy a router and connect it between your comcast modem and your computer.Cant access network settings in the web browser?
I would have to do with Annorax said. The addresses you got look like they are from your ISP. By chance did you need to bridge the modem so it worked with a router? If you do have a router, your can factory reset it by holding the reset button for 10 seconds.

Can I use my old T-mobile blackberry pearl with Verizon now that I have changed networks?

I have heard about unlocking you phone to use on other networks. Can someone please direct me how to do this? I bought a blackberry pearl with t-mobile and then my work dictated that I have to use verizon. I want to use my old phone with my new carrier. Can I use my old T-mobile blackberry pearl with Verizon now that I have changed networks?
You can get a code to unlock the phone, called the T-Mobile Sim Unlock Request. This service costs upwards of $60. But the good news is T-Mobile gives you the unlock code for your Blackberry free so you may use it with a different provider.

There is a condition T-Mobile has to get the unlock code for the Blackberry Pearl, you have to be under the original contract for atleast 90 days/3 months before they can give you the unlock code free. Can I use my old T-mobile blackberry pearl with Verizon now that I have changed networks?
I believe you are out of luck there. T-Mobile is GSM and Verizon is CDMA and the 2 are not even remotely compatible
you cannot use any cellphone that has a sims card with verizon

If so it could be that you have some kind of virus(?) in there thats causing it to happen?

    Try doing a clean up.
Can'y remember exactly where it is but you can change the order of preference for your networks.

Try searching help for network order.

Thanks,How do you connect to a network with windows vista when the network setting have been changed?
Well change the network settings in Vista so it will quit yelling at you. Or a sure fire way to fix it is install Linux on there. Linux doesn't care so much about network setting it will just stay running, and running, and running until you tell it to stop running
