I went into ##program10000, and its set to digital hybrid only. However, I recently updated my phone at verizon wireless and now whenever I am in a call with someone, my signal reads 1X instead of EV. It used to read EV during a call and now it doesn't. Ever since I updated my phone I have been getting very bad service.

Hmmmm....not sure mine always said 1x and i always have good service. You should ask verizon
